Alcohol and drug dependency are an increasing problem for society in the Middle East. Studies have shown that in Lebanon, abuse is mainly increasing among young people.

For successful prevention, it is necessary to know who the risk-groups are. That’s why SA4D ran a research project on young people in Lebanon in 2011. In cooperation with the American University of Beirut’s Center for Research on Population and Health, we studied Lebanese young people’s living conditions, risk behaviour, future prospects and values.

Knowledge for practice

SA4D built on the findings of the study. In a second stage, we worked with local partners to develop drug and alcohol prevention methods and to support Lebanese young people. The results of the research were also given to the people who make decisions regarding national youth policy.
