A Project to Improve the Life Prospects of Disadvantaged Children, Women, and Their Communities Through Access to Healthcare, WASH, Nutrition, and Sustainable Livelihoods in West Bengal, India.

West Bengal is one of the poorest states in India, while also being among the most populous and densely populated regions of the country. Rural and semi-rural areas are often isolated and difficult to reach, limiting the local population’s access to infrastructure, resources, and essential services.

Challenges: Lack of Hygiene and Inadequate Healthcare

A major challenge for young people, particularly women, in the Paschim Medinipur district is the limited hygiene infrastructure and insufficient access to healthcare. This negatively affects education and employment opportunities, as diseases, malnutrition, and health risks reduce school attendance and workforce participation.

Empowering Vulnerable Groups Through Sanitation Infrastructure and Economic Opportunities

The project is implemented in collaboration with the local partner organisation Chaplin Club and places a strong emphasis on improving sanitation facilities and providing hygiene products for girls. School toilets are being renovated, a water purification system is installed, and menstrual hygiene products are supplied. At the same time, the project creates training and employment opportunities to reduce high unemployment among women and promote their economic independence.

Comprehensive Measures to Promote Health, Nutrition, Hygiene, and Economic Self-Reliance

To support healthcare, the project provides regular, free access to health clinics with qualified doctors, ensuring basic medical care. In addition, interactive training programs on health, WASH, and nutrition are offered, alongside practical activities in kitchen gardens. The goal is to foster long-term behavioral changes, prevent avoidable diseases, and strengthen self-sufficient food production.
