A project to support vocational training students’ transition to the labour market and improve their health and that of their communities through access to clean water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and healthy nutrition in Oyam, northern Uganda.

Oyam District is affected by water scarcity, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and food insecurity—issues that are further exacerbated by climate change. Diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea, caused by contaminated water and poor personal hygiene, can in turn negatively affect the nutrition of those affected. At the same time, poverty, lack of knowledge and of diet diversity lead to malnutrition. This significantly undermines the population’s health , particularly among women. Furthermore, it hinders their education and employment outcomes.

Improved access to WASH and nutrition to sustainably improve public health …

The project is implemented together with the local partner organisation Action for Child Social and Economic Transformation (ACSET). It aims to sustainably improve the health and quality of life of disadvantaged youth and their communities. To this end, sustainable WASH facilities, such as toilets, showers, and clean water stations, will be built, alongside the regular implementation of training and awareness raising sessions to operate and maintain the infrastructure and to promote good hygiene practices. Food security is also promoted: knowledge about nutrient-rich diets and healthy eating habits is enhanced, and access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food is improved through the establishment of a school canteen and gardens.

… and break the cycle of poverty

Poor health leads to higher rates of school and work absenteeism, reduced ability to concentrate, and lower overall productivity. Therefore, improved access to WASH and healthy nutrition doesn’t only have positive effects on people’s health but also contributes to better educational attainment and employment outcomes. For instance, women may spend less time fetching water and preparing meals, allowing them to engage more in their education and in income-generating activities.

Get ready, get set for life!

The infrastructures are built within a vocational training centre’s campus, thereby improving the learning environment for young students. The centre offers quality vocational training in related trades such as plumbing, electricity, horticulture, and cooking, alongside basic employability and entrepreneurship skills and knowledge training. By adopting a holistic approach, the programme ensures that young people are employment-ready, equipped with the technical competences, business mindset and life skills to successfully entre the labour market.
