A clean environment is essential to ensure sustainable development. At SA4D, we consider the environment as a cross-cutting topic in all our projects. While our core focus is on health, education, and employment, we pursue a holistic approach, taking into account the natural environments of the project participants to ensure comprehensive, effective, and sustainable solutions.

“Sustainable agriculture is vital for Cambodia as an agricultural nation. Unfortunately, many farmers still rely on chemicals. At our school, we learned and practiced avoiding chemicals and using renewable energy in our agricultural systems. If all farmers adopted these practices, it would greatly benefit both the environment and public health.”

Fifteen-year-old Ngeak Keavann grows organic vegetables and raises fish with other students at the Prek Leap New Generation School in Phnom Penh, an SA4D partner. Through these activities, he has learned a great deal about the importance of sustainable agriculture.

What is SA4D doing?

SA4D is dedicated to raising environmental awareness among children, young people, and their communities. We share knowledge to understand the impact of human activities on the planet and encourage sustainable practices that benefit both people and the environment. By fostering eco-friendly behaviours, project participants are empowered to become agents of change in their communities, promoting long-term ecological well-being.

How is SA4D doing this?

In collaboration with our implementing partners, SA4D uses sport and play to promote environmental awareness. Through an experiential learning approach, participants explore topics related to sustainability such as green technologies, waste management, renewable energy, inspiring them to integrate these practices into their daily lives.

This is achieved through the holistic nature of SA4D projects, which cover multiple focus areas to create more thorough and lasting solutions. For instance, many of our projects combine health and education with sustainable infrastructure, such as school gardens, hydroponics, solar panels and wastewater systems, contributing to healthy nutrition and hygiene and improving school attendance. In employment-focused projects, participants develop skills and knowledge in agroecological farming and green business practices, supporting their income generation. SA4D also takes great care to ensure materials used for project activities are locally sourced, recycled or recyclable, and avoid plastic.

Why is SA4D doing this?

In line with the United Nations, SA4D recognises that human health and sustainable development cannot go without healthy environmental conditions such as clean air, safe water, sanitation, fertile soil, and balanced ecosystems. With climate change posing a significant threat to humanity and other forms of life on Earth, it is crucial to address these challenges to support the development of children and young people. Therefore, SA4D contributes to fostering healthy environments in all our projects, for a sustainable future for everyone.
