“I never thought that there was sexual discrimination like that in our neighbourhood.”
Despite the fact that he is disabled, Samy, as friends call him, was one of the most active children in the camp. “I don’t consider myself any different from the other children, because I am able to do everything they can do.”
Samy heard of gender stereotypes for the first time during the camp. “I had never imagined that there are trends in our community that are actually stereotypical. I always see women cooking and taking care of babies and I don’t expect men to be doing that, because that is just the way it is. I have learnt during this camp that men can also do it and that assuming only women should be taking care of babies and cooking for their families is gender stereotype.”
The twelve-year-old really enjoyed the two weeks: “Everything during the camp has been great: the coaches, the food and the games. I learnt a lot from the discussions that followed the games and I am eagerly waiting for the next camp!”
