SA4D has recently been elected as a member of PCC, the expert council of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS).
In this role, SA4D will promote technical support and advice in the field of Sport and Development.
The aim of CIGEPS is to promote the value of sport and its inclusion in public policy. To meet this objective, CIGEPS is backed by the Permanent Consultative Council (PCC) which helps its members to optimise the benefits of sport and physical education programmes. PCC assembles key sport federations, UN agencies and NGOs. Its members include the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Council of Europe and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
To promote the value of sport
CIGEPS was established in 1978. It is comprised of expert representatives from 18 UNESCO Member States. The committee recognises the use of sport as an instrument for promoting development and peace. It seeks to protect and promote traditional sports and games, and acknowledges the need to reduce the marginalisation of women within the sport world. The International Conferences of Ministers for Sport (MINEPS) are organized by CIGEPS. The next MINEPS-Conference will be held in June 2017 in the Russian Federation.
